Rick Frank and Yadesha Satheaswaran have written a beautiful chapter for our new book on this difficult topic, exploring historical and recent Coroner’s Inquests and their recommendations to prevent future death in similar circumstances.
On April 25, 2024, Rick Frank and I were also honoured to speak with WiCCD’s wonderful host of our YouTube programming, Maya Shukairy, as part of the Who Cares? Series – this time, Episode #25 – Who Cares about Inquests?
Rick and I talk at length about our work together on Coroner’s Inquests acting for various public interest interveners – Rick for the Black Action Defence Committee (BADC) and me for the Empowerment Council (EC), including some 8 years ago now in 2016 at the Andrew LOKU inquest and in 2022 on the Inquest into the death of Marc Ekamba.
This in depth discussion is an important segment for anyone who cares about issues of police interactions with persons in crisis and in particular Black people in crisis, but also for anyone who may find themselves involved in a Coroner’s Inquest whether as a witness, party or counsel.
